Check out our bulletin boards!
Golf ball painting apple shapes by the 3 year old class!

Apple name puzzles by the 4 year old class!  The children cut their apples on the lines and then had to put the apple together again to make their name!  They all did a great job!

Our Friendship Tree!
The 3 year olds painted the tree while the 4 year olds made the apples!  Great team work!

We had a wonderful time celebrating Dot Day!
First, we heard the story

"The Dot" By Peter H. Reynolds

This is a story about a little girl who does not feel she is an artist.  With some encouragement from her art teacher to "Just make a mark and see where it takes you."  Vashti makes a dot on her paper and that dot takes her on a journey of discovering the unmasked creativity in herself!  I love this story!  It is so important to remember that we all have a creative spirit and sometimes we need just a little encouragement to set it free!

Next we made Dots, of course!

The 4 year old's also matched lettered dots on their apple tree!  Some children matched uppercase to uppercase while others matched uppercase to lowercase letters!  I guess our apple trees are now dot trees!

We would like to introduce you to :
Mat Man
You might be wondering, "What is Mat Man?"  Mat Man is a character that is introduced through the Handwriting Without Tears program.  Through this character we work on important skills such as:

  • body awareness
  • drawing & prewriting
  • counting
  • building
  • socializing & sharing
The children love to work together to build Mat Man, although many refer to him as Bat Man!

Dear Parents,

We will be having our school pictures taken by Gallery Portraits.  This is different than the rest of Underhill School.  We use Gallery Portraits because they are able to take their time with the children and the pictures come out fantastic!  They will be in the classroom on Thursday September 22nd, and Friday September 23rd during each class time.  Please return the attached envelope with payment by picture day!  You can check out the different backgrounds on their website, www.galleryportraitstudios.com.  Click on the school tab and then Fall Poster.  I also have a poster in the classroom that you can look at.

Please contact me with any questions or concerns!

Thanks,

Lisa

We had a terrific first week of school!

Welcome!
We are so excited for the upcoming school year!  I know you have many questions, and I hope to answer some with this letter.

What are the hours of the preschool?
Morning Session:  9:15-11:45                         Afternoon Session 12:30-3:00
Drop off and pick up will both be out back at the preschool playground, weather permitting.  If it is raining we will be under the gazebo next to the playground.  Please do not enter the large playground if there are students out at recess.  Please wait for one of the preschool teachers to open the gate.  We are doing our best to always know who is on school grounds in order to keep all of our children safe.
What should my child bring to school?
Your child will need a small backpack, one healthy snack and a drink, along with a change of clothes in a ziplock bag.  (just in case!)

What is the preschool schedule?
The following is a tentative schedule.  For the most part we will always follow this schedule, but I like to be flexible!
  • Drop off/Outside play
  • Circle
  • Centers/Small group
  • Snack
  • Circle/Music
  • Outside play/Pick up

I am a big believer in the benefits of outside play.  It is so important for large muscle growth, exercise, social skills……the list is endless.  So we will go out most days, even in the winter!

Each year I try to grow as an educator.  I have been working hard to understand the area of technology.  If you don’t already know, I have a blog for the preschool where I will try to keep you informed of the happenings in the classroom and provide some helpful activities to enhance your child’s learning.  This has been a work in progress!  The blog can be found at lpollardhelp.blogspot.com.

My newest initiative is to provide music in the classroom.  I believe that music and the arts are a big part of learning.  I have been taking guitar lessons and I am hoping to provide the children with a half hour of music to enhance early learning skills, such as, body parts, positional words, colors, counting and letters!

I hope I have answered some of the big questions.  Please feel free to contact me with any other questions or concerns and we look forward to a fabulous school year!

Sincerely,
Lisa Pollard
